I have been wanting to go to Switzerland for a long time. When my friend invited me to visit her in Zurich, I knew it was the perfect excuse to finally explore the country. Or at least, what is possible on a weekend. What followed was a weekend of good food, amazing views and the kind of company that makes time fly.
For the past six months, I’ve been taking trains more regularly, so I figured, why not make this my first longer train journey? Let’s just say German trains being delayed is no joke. We managed to find cheap tickets to go to Zurich from Amsterdam. We ended up paying 150EUR per person, definitely worth it for 8 to 9 hours of travel. When I mentioned to one of my colleagues that I would be going to Switserland through Germany, he immediately told me to check the later trains. He was very convinced we would have delays and we would miss our connecting train in Germany. I’m happy I listened. What should have been a smooth ride turned into a two-hour delay, making me regret not reserving a seat. But hey, eventually, we made it to Zurich, and that’s all that matters.
There she was, waiting for us on the platform! I hope you have that type of friendship where you can just pick up where you left off. The one with whom you have the most random yet deep conversations -one of those chats where you somehow go from life philosophies to laughing about the weirdest things. I’m sure the woman sitting next to us in the train would have loved to participate in our conversation.
She welcomed us with dinner at her place and to top off the night, we watched the replay of Miss Universe. We came to the strong conclusion that all the contestants had identical makeup. And while Denmark may have taken the crown, we still don’t believe she was the most deserving winner. We fell asleep somewhere between judging evening gowns and debating beauty pageant politics.
On the Saturday, we were so lucky with the weather, so we took full advantage of it. Lunch on a rooftop with a view? Check. A cute boat ride across the Zurich lake? Check. We spent most of the day wandering through the streets of Zurich. The highlight of the day? A visit to the Lindt Museum, a paradise for chocolate lovers. But let’s just say we didn’t leave empty-handed. Wannika’s Polène bag was put to very good use, and we walked out with enough chocolate to last us… well, probably not that long. Tom is still dreaming about that big piece of chocolate he has bought! The day ended in the most Swiss way possible—with a cheese fondue. But instead of bread, the star of the meal was pear. A game-changer. Full and happy, we practically rolled back home.
When organizing our trip, we knew we wouldn’t have enough time to visit lakes and mountains. We had to make a choice. I did not want to miss seeing the mountains with snow, so we chose Sunday to be dedicated to Mount Titlis. Three hours by train flew by because we couldn’t stop talking, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by snow. The views were incredible and no picture could translate the mountains’ beauty.
We enjoyed the winter vibes—taking touristy pictures, sledging in donuts (because why not?), and eating. Tasting local beer alongside bratwurst and rösti, could not be missed.
Back in Zurich, we ended the night with pizza and football (Tom was invested in the Eagles game). After that, we finally finished Miss Universe… only to go down a rabbit hole that led us to Mister World. Let’s just say, we did not take it seriously, and the laughter didn’t stop.

On Monday it was time to go back. Luckily no incidents or delays happened.
We had such a good time, that it left us wanting more. I already booked our next trip to Switzerland end of May. This time we will be taking the plane and get a bit more time. Can’t wait to visit more and spend time with my beautiful friend!
Do you have any recommendations for places to visit during my second trip? Leave them in the comments!
With Love,
Brenda
